Hakuna Matata from Menzies – The Lion King comes to Birmingham
August 15, 2013
Since its release in 1994, The Lion King has gone on to become one of the most successful animated films of all time, earning its place as a firm family favourite across all generations. The Oscar-winning score put the phrase ‘Hakuna Matata’ in the vocabulary of children all over the globe, and kept millions of people glued to their seats with the story of lion cub Simba’s epic journey to reclaim his kingdom.
It’s no surprise, then, that this Disney classic was adapted into a musical in 1997 which is now the seventh longest-running musical on Broadway; winning seven Tony awards along the way. But you don’t need to head to the States to experience a bit of Lion King magic because a touring production of the show is now at the Birmingham Hippodrome until 28 September – and Menzies Hotels are here to put you right at the heart of Simba’s African Serengeti.
Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the show features all the incredible songs from Elton John’s original soundtrack. With dazzling staging and highly imaginative costumes, masks and puppets, The Lion King uses breathtaking theatrical magic to bring this much-loved film to life. You’ll also be happy to know the show is suitable for ages 6 and up, making it the perfect summer holiday outing for the whole family.
